Gear and Weapons

Earn, find, and create amazing artifacts!carathir041retouched

Recover an ancient weapon from the forest. Defeat a bandit and take his chestplate. Learn to make a shield that can deflect axe blows.

Actual metal weapons can be carried in camp, and we've got a lot to choose from! However, only a foam weapon may be drawn against other campers or staff. Metal weaponry is only for performances, training, and as a status symbol. Our metal weaponry is re-enactment quality, high carbon steel. Abuse of metal weapons will result in considerable dicipline, there is an agreement you will read&sign with your Registration packet.

Latex "boffer" weaponry is available for all under-18 age groups, and is also the combat weaponry for adults. These are high quality professionally-made boffers, not just whiffle bats with foam on them...or whatever horrible variations you've seen before. There is little danger to getting hurt, though safety training must still be taken. We have a strong policy about abuse of weaponry, even with the foam weapons. Boffers can knock someone over and can bruise even through armor...unless proper precautions are taken. We take safety very seriously.

Gear Ownership: At Camp Carathir, you do not get to "keep" most weapons and gear after camp is over, but whatever you acquire in-camp is yours for the duration of your stay. It is simply not possible for our guests to keep the weapons that we supply them, as we purchase the highest quality and authentic gear, which lasts us many years with care. There are plenty of other things you're able to take home with you though!

Types of Weapons:

Staves- A striking weapon that can be more dangerous than a sword. There are quarterstaves and shortstaves available in camp. They are light and seem easy to use, though there is much skill involved, especially in protecting of ones fingers. Shortstaves are more like canes or walking-sticks, and can be ornately designed (mostly for ceremonial functions). Quarterstaves are around 6-9 feet long and are for purely combat purposes. Our staves are made of either Oak or Ash.

crossbowBows and Crossbows- We have a wide selection of bows and crossbows available. However,, most are only useable while on the archery ranges or for training. There are also a handful of bows that you alone can possess for the duration of your stay. These ownable bows are rare, and only the most skilled archers or lucky few adventurers will earn them.

Swords- The classic melee weapon. We have variants of all different styles:single-edged, double-edged, single-handed and double-handed. All swords and other edged weapons must be sheathed when not in-use. They are all medieval/fantasy in design. We have no Japanese/samurai blades, rapiers, or Roman-era weapons.

Daggers- Compact and deadly, these weapons are perfect for close combat. Very few daggers will be found during your stay. Even if you never get a chance to own one, we will have them available for use/training while supervised by a Weapon Master.

Axes- We have an assortment of single and double edged battle-axes of varying sizes. Many adventurers prefer axes over swords due to their brutality and functionality.

Maces- A true warriors weapon. It requires great strength to wield a two-handed mace, few can master this weapon in 10 days. Maces come in different styles, some with flails, chains, spikes, or just a simple eloquent steel hammer. No need to pierce an enemies armor, if you can crush it!

Polearms and Spears- As long as a quarterstaff, and as sharp as a sword. These weapons allow you to keep your enemy out of arms reach, perfect against a melee combatant! We have many different styles, lengths, and weights.

Unarmed- You will learn unarmed combat, as well as use improvised weapons like shields, branches, rocks, and the environment. We also have some 'fish weapons' in the form of spiked gauntlets, metal claws, and brass knuckles. You may be more likely to see staff wielding fist weapons, but there are some for a select few campers to discover and wield.

Throwing- Throwing axes are amazingly accurate and have great stopping power. So do knives, stars, and shot. You will learn to master these under the teachings of our Weapon Master. Axe-throwing competitions are very popular, and the rewards are excellent!

Armor, Clothing, and other rewards:

Summer-time can be quite hot during the day, and upon your arrival at Camp Carathir you will receive linen pants and a tunic/blouse. You will receive two sets of these loose comfortable clothes (we provide laundry services every other day or by request). We also provide optional leather bootie-covers to cover over your sneakers or boots, since Adidas® didn't exist 1000 years ago...

The only things you should bring to camp are a change of clothing to wear to/from camp, a good supply undergarments (socks, undies, bra) as well as sturdy shoes and/or hiking boots.

Cloth

There are countless pieces of fine raiment that you can acquire here. No two adventurers will look alike (unless they choose to), and you will bear the emblem of your house wherever you go during your time at camp. Cloth is preferred during the days. It's not flashy, but it's perfect when it is hot outside. A myriad of colors and styles are available.

Leather

This is the primary armor available. It ranges from rugged to ornate. Many campers choose to leave their leather armor behind when venturing on a hot day or practicing a skilled profession, but upon returning to camp they equip the full gear. Nightly ceremonies and events are also popular places to wear and show-off the nicest leather armor you acquire.

Mail and Plate

Not only can it be heavy and hot, it often restricts movement. This isn't the most popular form of armor at role-playing camp. However, during ceremonies, combat, and dangerous quests, its always great to have at least one member of your party wearing this heavy protection.

Helms and Shields

There are a wide variety of metal helms available, many of which actually have better breathability than leather headgear, and can be comfortably worn anywhere. Shields are also common, and they vary in weight, size, and design. Most adventurers who have 1-handed weapons prefer carrying a shield in their offhand since it affords them protection from arrows and long weapons such as spears.

Objects and Accessories

There are many things that you can acquire that are not necessarily clothing. Quivers, canteens, tools, jewelry, pouches, instruments, and other such objects can be made by a professional, found, or rewarded to you.
